Motivational Interviewing for Alcohol Use

Goal: To be able to use this evidence-based counseling approach, adapting it to the medical setting, to help patients with alcohol use problems move closer to making healthy behavior changes or accept treatment.

Needs and Training Gaps
After completing this activity, participants will be able to:
- Use motivational interviewing skills to build rapport with patients having alcohol use problems.
- Use motivational interviewing skills to deal with patient resistance when an alcohol use behavior change is needed.
- Motivate patients to make changes in alcohol use behavior or accept treatment when it is indicated.
